The biggest cruise ship ever to take port in Iceland!

The MSC Meraviglia took port in Akureyri on may 24th! They have around 6.500 persons on board.

This vessel took port both in Akureyri and Reykjavík. The size of it alone only tells you half the story. The ship itself is 167.000 tons and is one of 17 ships owned by MSC Cruises. The amount of transportation needed to take all of them to their excursions is huge.

There are more ships that come this summer but one of the most fun parts to put into comparison have to do with some of the smaller islands around Iceland. In Eyjafjörður wich Akureyri is also located in is a small island called Hrísey where there will two ships stop at. The population of the island is around 150 persons. The ship that will stop there will have little more than 325 persons on board. Which means that the ship that stops is more than 2 times the population there.
But there is another island called Grímsey, and that one is even smaller with only the population of 60. They will get a larger ship then Hrísey. The largest ship to take port in Grímsey will be Silver Cloud, they will have a total of 500 on board. So the little island of Grímsey will get a ship that has almost 10 times their population!
