It´s old. It´s new. It´s fishy.

Grandinn is an area that´s not too far from the city center. You can easily walk there and on the way, there are look worthy things. What stands out in the way there is Slipurinn – it´s where they take ships in and fix them. You walk really close to when passing and that gives you a unique perspective of the ships that are there.

Grandinn used to be where most of the work around fishing was done. The houses that now host ice cream parlor, jewelry store and designers used to be where fishermen fixed their nets before going out to sea. For some time they also worked the fish there to get it ready for selling. You can see pictures of it below, there you see that the men worked the fish and the women weighted it and took care of putting it into packages. This area has the look and feels of what used to be done there, which only gives it this unique and one of a kind experience. The photos that come with this post are from that area from when it was still just for fishing. So if you go there you will see how much has changed! Most part of the area is built on a landfill to fit everything that is there today. On one of the pictures, you see that there’s a long line into the sea and at the end is an island. This is where Grandinn is today! The small island that is there was used to build oil storage on and they are still there today – so if you find them you know where you are in the picture.

Once you get there its a world of wonders that await. The first thing you will see is the northern light museum and close to it the cuties shop called the Cupcake Café. It´s so small you might have to look for it – but do look for it, their cupcakes are to do die for. You don´t have to walk far cause right across the street from it is the maritime museum (we wrote about it here) that if you have the time you should take a look at. Littel further down the line is an ice cream parlor called Valdís (we wrote about ice cream here). This goes on and on ending with a Kumiko teahouse. There you can find a unique experience like nothing else in Iceland. To end the walk on the sweet side there is a chocolate maker at the very end called Omnom where you can get Icelandic made chocolate.

We got our hands on a map of the area where you can see the stores and their location. This was done by Kumiko and there´s a little bit extra information on them in there as well. You can find it here.
