Capital of the North

We have not forgotten Akureyri!

So this is the largest town outside of the capital area. It is located in the north of Iceland and there are two islands outside of the fjord where Akureyri is located, Hrísey and Grímsey. The arctic circle runs directly through the island Grímsey. There is a video with this post that will go over all of this. We get to go over the fun stuff. So what can you do in Akureyri?

The trip that gets it all is Jewel of the north. In that one, you go to the most magnificent places in the north of Iceland. You go to Goðafoss, Mývatn, Námaskarð, Dimmuborgir, and Skútustaðir. Just this one excursion takes you to the most popular places around Akureyri and the north.

So what can you do while you’re in Akureyri with your extra time?

You could visit the church of Akureyri which stands over the town and is symbolic for Akureyri. The church itself is built around 1940 and is today a trademark for the town. People disagree with how many steps are leading up to the church and everyone has their own count.

Brynjuís is the next thing you should try out. It´s an ice cream parlor in the old town of Akureyri. The walk there would just be a pleasant walk alongside the shore but on your way back you could walk alongside the hillside and beautiful old buildings. If you walk that way back you will hit the city center and can take a look around or grab a cup of coffee. On your way there you will walk past the old theater house where they set up all kinds of plays. This is the only professional theater outside of the capital and has been since 1973. It stands close to the center of Akureyri and is one of the most beautiful houses in Akureyri.

If you have the extra time the Botanical Garden is worth taking a look at.
The garden is one of the northernmost botanical gardens in the world. The Public Park was opened in 1912 but the Botanic section in 1957. There are about 6600 alien taxa growing in the garden in beds and nursery and around 430 species of the native taxa. The park is very popular both with locals and visitors.
The Botanical Garden is equally popular with the local population and visitors to Akureyri. A wide variety of both Icelandic and foreign flora is to be found there and new species are always being added to the collection. The garden, therefore, is an excellent choice for those wishing to take a break from the stress of daily life, playing as they do, the role both of a peaceful public park and also a beautiful plant collection.

Hof Cultural Centre is located in the center of Akureyri and is one of the town´s landmarks. The main entrance of Hof faces northwest. The house has a view in all directions. You can also exit and enter the building from the southeast end. The main entrance has a sliding door and the south entrance has a swing door. Walking along the city of Akureyri in the country Northern Iceland, this is one of the best sites that one will always come into sight with. Hof cultural and conference center is located right down by the pier. Kista is a shop on the ground floor in Hof Cultural Center. There you can find goods of various kinds, but the stores’ main attraction is Icelandic design.
